AAUP-TNS Stands in Solidarity with Unionized Colleagues

AAUP-TNS, as part of the New School Labor Coalition, stands in solidarity with our unionized colleagues as they negotiate new contracts with the university.

We know that all workers at The New School have worked equally hard to ensure an engaged, supportive, and positive learning environment for our students, many of whom are themselves unionized student workers. Yet, just this summer, in recognition of our work keeping the university running during Covid, TNS granted bonuses to non-union employees, including full-time faculty members of AAUP-TNS, but did not offer the same additional and much-needed compensation to the thousands of union employees – faculty, staff, and students – who are just as much the backbone of the institution.

The New School was founded on a claim of progressive values, including avowed support for unionized workers. Yet in practice, the institution has consistently failed to recognize that our working conditions are students’ learning conditions and has, instead, actively pitted us against each other in competition. We know that as workers, we are members of the same community, that we share many common working conditions, and that when one of us is harmed, our whole community is harmed.

AAUP-TNS urges all AAUP-TNS members and allies to join the upcoming Rally for Respect on Wed Sept 14 at 12:00 PM at the University Center (63 5th Avenue). We must urgently show solidarity with all workers at The New School demanding equal respect and treatment. The rally will culminate in a march to the President’s brownstone at 21 West 11th Street.
